Combustion efficiency of homogeneous fuel-air mixtures in a 5-inch ram-jet-type combustor

Combustion-efficiency data have been obtained for a 5-inch-diameter ram-jet-type combustor with a straight V-gutter flame holder and a simple cone flame holder with gasoline, isopentane, benzene, and propylene oxide. The data cover a range of inlet static pressures from 2 to 0.5 atmospheres, inlet temperatures from 100 degrees to 300 degrees F, and inlet velocities from 170 to 300 feet per second. A correlation of the data is presented and is shown to be in agreement with a propagation mechanism based on the concept that the rate of flame propagation through an unburned mixture is a function of the fundamental flame speed.
