A thorough review of the literature indicated the need for research on the statistical nature of the fatigue of metals. While much effort has been directed toward the effect of numerous variables on the average fatigue properties, the statistical variations of the mean properties and its causes have been virtually neglected. An extensive experimental program was undertaken to study this subject and to determine and evaluate the fundamental factors which influence this behavior.
