The synthesis, the purification and physical properties of four 1-alkylnaphthalenes, 1-methylnaphthalene, 1-ethylnaphthalene, 1-butylnaphthalene, and 1-isobutylnaphthalene, are described. In each case, the hydrocarbon was synthesized from 1-naphthylmagnesium bromide by well-known methods. The final hydrocarbons (a minimum of 2000 ml each) were purified by fractional distillation through 6-foot Podbielniak columns to obtain 500 milliliters of each hydrocarbon with a calculated purity higher than 99 mole percent.
