Assumptions leading to the empirical Blasius law for the resistance of smooth pipes to fluid flow are generalized and expressed in such a way as to furnish a velocity distribution for any empirical resistance law. The method thus becomes applicable to arbitrarily high Reynolds numbers. The concept of the mixing length is introduced in connection with the Boussinesq formula for turbulent shear.
