Theoretical analysis of the motions of an aircraft stabilized in roll by a displacement-response, flicker-type automatic pilot

A general analysis is presented which allows the rolling motions of an aircraft using a displacement-response, flicker-type automatic pilot to be determined. It is shown that the inertia, damping, and control characteristics of the aircraft in roll and the lag time of the automatic system are sufficient to define these rolling oscillations, and charts are presented by which the amplitude and period of the resultant steady-state oscillations may be found.
